Spring Cleaning can be great fun!  It’s a great opportunity to open up all those windows, let all the fresh air in, and make your home clean, tidy and zesty fresh with more efficient spaces.  If you print this task list off it will make your spring clean so much easier, just follow it and you will be surprised at how quickly the time goes.

  

Now, before you begin, here are some extra little spring cleaning tips:

  1. Give yourself at least a week in time for a thorough spring clean. Work from one end of your house to the other end.
  2. Plan some easy meals for the days you will spend cleaning or even better cook some meals in advance for the freezer.  As you clean, keep a list of any jobs you notice that need to be done around your home: little paint touch-ups or a stain on your curtains.  Don’t  get distracted by these chores during your cleaning, save them for later when  you are all done and dusted.  Keep another list of things you spot that is needed.  Particularly when you clean out your fridge and food cupboards, you will probably  notice that some of your supplies are running low.
  3. Grab an empty basket or cardboard box and put in it anything you need your lovely husband to sort through (odds and sods such as miscellaneous receipts you’re not sure you need to keep, a mix of bolts and screws you’ve found in his trouser pocket  but you’re afraid to get rid of because if you do he’s bound to come to  you tomorrow asking if you’ve seen that tiny screw that is vital for  something important, then there’s that jazzy Christmas tie you’re really hoping he’ll finally part with) Gingerly ask him to sort through the basket when he has a bit of time.

HALLWAY

  1. Dust lighting fittings and light switches
  2. Wipe down walls and skirting boards
  3. Wipe down doors, door handles architraves and tops of doors
  4. Wash bench or other furnishings.  Wash bench cushion, if you have one.
  5. If you have coat hooks, sort out all the coats and whatever has accumulated on the hooks.  Donate unwanted items to  charity
  6. Clean or replace entrance mat
  7. Sweep and scrub floors
  8. Reseal grout lines, if necessary
  9. Varnish floor, if necessary

BEDROOMS

  1. Open windows and let all that fresh air in
  2. Dust furniture.
  3. For each drawer: remove items, wipe out drawer,  place items back neatly.  Donate Items you no longer need to charity
  4.  Remove everything from wardrobes and  wipe out. Put everything back neatly.  Donate items you no longer  need to charity.
  5. Move Bed.  Sort and put away anything  that was under bed.  Sweep or vacuum under bed and mop if necessary.    Try not to store things under bed.
  6. Put bed back.  Turn mattress and then freshen by sprinkling with baking soda, letting sit briefly, and then vacuuming it up.
  7. Wash bedding and curtains.  Wash pillows and duvet in hot water or take to a laundrette.
  8. Dust lights and lampshades
  9. Wash windows and window sills.  Wipe light switches.  Wash walls and skirting boards.
  10. Clean mirrors, pictures and paintings
  11. Wash doors and door handles
  12. Sweep and wash floor or vacuum

 

BATHROOMS

  1. Open windows for more fresh air
  2. Empty all cabinets.  Wash inside, replace items neatly.  Throw away any expired medicines and cosmetics
  3. Wash outside of cabinets
  4. Clean bath. Clean out plughole
  5. Clean toilet, inside and out.  Remove seat and clean around seat bolts
  6. Clean basin and plughole
  7. Clean mirror and frame .
  8. Dust light fitting
  9. Wash windows and window sills. Wash light fitting.  Wash down walls and skirting boards.  Wash doors and door handles.
  10.  Sweep and wash floors.
  11. Reseal grout lines if necessary.

KITCHEN

  1. Open windows again.
  2. Remove and clean window blinds or curtains.
  3. For each cabinet: Remove items, wipe out,  place items back neatly.  Donate unwanted items to charity
  4. Wipe kick boards and skirting boards
  5. Sharpen knives
  6. Wash cabinet doors, draws and door handles
  7. Clean and organize fridge freezer and defrost if necessary.  Check food expiry dates.
  8. Clean oven
  9. Clean stove Clean under fridge and stove.
  10. Vacuum refrigerator coils.
  11. Clean microwave
  12. Clean crumbs out of toaster
  13. Clean and descale kettle.
  14. Wipe down all other appliances
  15. Wash work tops and back splash as well as tiles
  16. Wash and shine sink.  Clean plughole
  17. Clean Dishwasher.
  18. Dust and clean light fittings.
  19. Wash windows and window sills.  Remove window blinds or curtains and wash.
  20. Wash light switches
  21. Sweep and wash floor.
  22. Reseal grout lines, if necessary.

DINING ROOM

  1. Open windows to air the room
  2. Wash curtains.
  3. Wipe down table and chairs or vacuum chairs
  4. Wipe down or dust other furnishings.
  5. Polish table, if necessary
  6. Dust any displayed china or serving dishes.
  7. Wash table linens.
  8. Clean and Shine silverware.
  9. Dust pictures and paintings
  10. Wash windows and window sills.
  11. Wash light fittings
  12. Wash walls and skirting boards
  13. Wash doors, door frames and door handles
  14. Clean floors.

LIVING ROOM/ FAMILY ROOM/ PLAYROOM

  1. Open windows……….Mmmmm fresh air
  2. Vacuum sofas.
  3. Spot clean sofas, if necessary.
  4. Wash throws, cushions and blankets.
  5. Dust shelves, furniture and decor.
  6. Clean lamps and lampshades, vacuum where necessary
  7. Wash windows and window sills.
  8. Clean television screen.
  9. Carefully dust electronics.
  10. Tidy electronics wires.  Tuck nicely out of sight.  Label them, if practical.
  11. Sort through music CDs and DVD collections
  12. Sort books and magazines.  Donate or  recycle ones that no longer suit your family’s interests.
  13. Wash children’s toys. Donate or store toys  that your children have grown too old for.
  14. Wash light switches
  15. Wash walls and skirting boards
  16. Wash doors and door handles
  17. Clean/vacuum floors.

UTILITY ROOM

  1. Open windows.
  2. Wash windows and window sills.
  3. Wash cabinet doors.
  4. Wash inside cabinets.
  5. Wash sink. Clean pughole
  6. Wash outside of washer and dryer.
  7. Wash inside of washing machine.
  8. Wipe light switch
  9. Wash walls and skirting boards
  10. Wash doors and door handles.
  11. sweep and wash floors.
  12. Reseal grout lines, if necessary

STAIRWELLS

  1. sweep/vacuum stairs
  2. Spot clean walls.
  3. Wipe down handrail.
  4. Dust paintings and pictures and light fittings

OUTSIDE AREA

  1. Sweep porch
  2. Wash thresholds
  3. Wash exterior doors.  Give front door a  fresh coat of paint, if necessary.
  4. Clean or replace welcome mat

REMEMBER TO:

  • Clean blades of ceiling fans.
  • Sort through and organize family photographs  (digitally or into albums)
  • Sort and clean any other rooms such as the  office, downstairs toilet
